Sprint 2: Usability Test

This studio was about usability tests for designs, specifically usability tests for ovens. We came up with three tasks: moving the top rack of the oven two notches down, preheating the oven to 375 degrees and setting the timer for 1 hours. These tasks were specifically common tasks that users would have to perform when using the oven. The oven we tested was a GE Oven model number JD750SF1SS. Three users were asked to perform these three tasks and were recorded for time, number of unnecessary steps and asked how difficult the task was. This gave us a good indication of the designs usability. Our results show that new users have a difficult time in completing the timer and preheating tasks.

Choosing a uniform group of users would have yielded better results for our usability test. Our usability test consisted of two experienced users and one inexperienced user. As expected, the two experienced users had a very easy time using the oven, while the inexperienced user struggled. This told us that the oven design was not beginner friendly. Therefore, having a more uniform user group would have given us more specific results.


I enjoyed learning about running a usability test as it puts into perspective the necessity of a good design. When users struggle with performing a common task, it indicates a certain part of the design that is not user friendly. In the case of the oven, a new user would have difficulty knowing exactly how to preheat the oven, as there is no separate preheat button.
