AI ARENA is an Ethereum native game (dApp) where players all over the world can purchase, train and battle characters powered by real artificial intelligence. Over time, we intend to introduce an in-game token to power the game and decentralize ownership and governance to the community.
What is the Game?
AI Arena is a fighting game that is most similar to games like Super Smash Bros and Street Fighter. However, there is one important distinction — you (the human) do not control your fighter in battle…
Autonomous Agents
If you don’t control your fighter, then how does it fight? Each fighter is powered by AI. The AI controls the moves of the fighter in a battle. The goal is to improve your AI over time through training.
Training Your AI
The training environment is where the human player gets involved. Human players coach the fighter AI to make improvements. Doing this helps to prepare your fighter for battle.
There are different training modes. A fresh AI that’s just “out-of-the-box” does not have any understanding of how to engage with this environment. Initially, the human can demonstrate actions or moves that the AI can learn to copy. This is a training environment called Imitation Learning. As the AI becomes more advanced, it can actually learn through playing against itself via iterative simulations (think AlphaGo). This training environment is called Self-Play. Over time, the AI could potentially become “superhuman” as it finds new combinations of moves that are hard to conceive for the human player.
New Dimension to Gaming
Taking human control away from the battle introduces a new creative dimension to gaming strategy.
The users will have to figure out how to train their AI given a set of battle attributes that the AI is “born” with. The battle attributes do not change, so the human training the AI must account for and help the fighter maximize strengths and minimize weaknesses. Ultimately, this should result in unique AIs powering each fighter since the optimal fighting strategy (according to human intuition) is different for a fast/weak fighter compared to a slow/powerful fighter.
So what happens when a fighter who has blistering speed battles another with punishing power? The truth is, we don’t know. Moreover, the AI behaviour in battle may defy human logic. We are reminded of the moment when AlphaGo made Move 37 vs. Lee Sedol. This unpredictable element is exciting and ultimately helps human players improve their training strategy over time.
Grow Your Roster
Players are incentivized to enter their fighters into battle, because winners receive the opportunity to breed with the losing character and create a new fighter. In addition, when the native token gets introduced to the platform, winners can also claim rewards in the native token. Growing your collection of fighters expands your arsenal, but they are also NFTs that can be bought and sold on an active secondary marketplace which creates collectible value.
More Than a Game
We are believers in the “ownership economy” thesis, whereby economic benefit should accrue more directly to the individuals who create value. AI researchers are creators just like bloggers or influencers, but they have limited options of monetizing their creations. AI Arena provides researchers a way to properly monetize IP, whilst creating an opportunity for everyone to own AI through NFTs.
The game is an abstraction medium that distills complexity and increases engagement. We hope to educate the world about AI through this fun and easy-to-use dApp game.
We see this as a win-win-win. Researchers win because they can directly monetize and capture their IP. Users win because they can have fun playing the game, collect NFTs that can increase in value, and ultimately earn money in the ecosystem. AI wins because we hope to inspire the next generation of participants to create solutions using this powerful technology.
