I think your point regarding the cost of academic journals and conferences being exorbitant and ridiculous is definitely true. I’d love to spend time reading directly about the forefront of human ingenuity. Something should be done to change this paradigm, and indeed already is with the exponential increase in the popularity of arXiv.
However, I cannot agree with you when you argue that you should be entitled to a slice of this exploitative pie. Firstly because it implies you don’t think people should be paying less for access to cutting edge research, just that you want some of that money too, which is the wrong stance to take on this issue. And secondly it implies that you don’t really feel that research should be done for research’s own sake, but rather only for profit, exploitative or otherwise, and on some level this is even worse.
