A certified nursing assistant (CNA) is the backbone of the health care industry. Their duties vary according to the patient’s condition and their need for care. Working as a team member, the CNA takes vital signs and helps patients bathe, dress, eat, and go to activities. Educational Requirements

To become a CNA, individuals must have a high school diploma or GED, plus certified nursing assistant training program approved by the state, which often sets a minimum number of clinical and classroom hours.

CNA Program

This program typically requires 8 to 10 weeks of training depending on if you enroll in day or evening classes. Courses revolves around learning how to record patient’s health concerns and report that information to nurses. You will also learn how to measure patients’ vital signs, such as blood pressure and temperature and provide physical support to assist patients to perform daily living activities such as feed, bathe and dress patients. It prepares nursing assistants for evidence-based patient care. The program also includes clinical training which further emphasizes patient care through interactions with patients and their families.

CNA programs require participants to complete clinical hours to strengthen their practical skills. This externship aids to build patient care skills, learn how to check vital signs, and practice CPR. Students often complete these hours at a local hospital, nursing home, or extended care facility.

Post-Graduation

After completion of the program, students will appear for the state’s nursing assistant certification i.e. Connecticut Nurse Aide Exam before practicing. Employment can be found at any long-term health care facilities including convalescent centers and hospitals.
