8 Things I’ve Learned as a Volunteer Teacher in Africa

2 weeks in the Bombolulu Slum

1) Do not drink water in front of the children as it might be a luxury that they cannot afford

2) Helping a kid does not necessary mean giving him whatever he asked for (Reminded me of a Chinese saying: It’s more important to teach them to fish rather than giving it freely to them)

3) Be consistent with kids, they remember EVERYTHING

4) Being poor does not mean the kids are not smart

5) It is very easy to be happy

6) Learning to teach with limited resources increases my creativity

7) Money is not the solution to everything

8) On the first day of school, the kids all looked the same but on the last day, you have each one of those little faces imprinted distinctively in your heart
