Travel insurance providers consider disability or illness (medical condition) as a pre-existing condition that requires treatment or diagnosis before purchasing the policy.

Some of the conditions include:

  • Chronic diseases — diabetes, heart problems.
  • Physical disabilities.
  • Vision or hearing impairments.
  • Psychological needs such as mental illnesses.

Most companies do not offer coverage for a pre-existing condition because travel medical insurance covers any medical emergencies while you are in the US. It doesn’t substitute the health care insurer would have received for an illness or medical condition in their home country.

Often, travelers experience acute onset of a pre-existing condition, which is an unexpected and immediate reappearance of a previous medical condition. The acute onset condition requires immediate medical care but often is not covered in medical insurance.

Medical Insurance likely covers hearing or vision impairment or disability (wheelchair) cases, provided the insurer didn’t need medical assistance or treatment last year.
