Introducing the Poe API v2

Hi Developers,

Building on Poe is the fastest way to build an AI product experience for millions of users across iOS, Android, web and MacOS. Today, we’re excited to introduce major enhancements to that experience with release of Poe API v2, bringing you the ability to query any other bot on Poe for free, and the ability to return images. These updates help deliver the simplest and most cost effective way for you to build and deploy AI products to a large audience.

Query other bots for free: One of the biggest challenges in developing an AI product is the cost of LLM inference. With API v2, we’re letting everyone building on top of Poe offload this problem to us. That means no matter how popular your bot gets, you don’t have to pay LLM costs, or risk having to shut it down if you hit a limit or run out of money.

Return images: Bots can now return images and Poe clients will render them as first class objects. One example of a bot that demonstrates this feature is the new StableDiffusionXL bot.

Here are some example bots that take advantage of the improved API:

• Web search: this bot conducts web searches and then uses GPT-3.5 to write an answer informed by the searches.
• HuggingFaceExplorer: this bot lets you explore Hugging Face’s extensive library of conversational models.
• YouTube summarizer: using Claude, quickly generate a text summary along with answers to your questions for YouTube links

Finally, we built the Web Search and StableDiffusionXL bots entirely on the same API we’re exposing to all of you, as part of an effort to make it more robust and first class. We made a large number of small improvements to it as a result of this. If you build a bot, you’ll now be using the same exact interface that our own bots use. We hope API v2 helps us deliver on our goal to be the easiest way to build chat-based AI products and reach a mass audience.
