Thank you for this. I was stunned at Trudeau’s treacherous reaction to the Hebdo massacre as well as his gross ignorance of Hebdo’s actual satirical targets. To me there are two main problems with pronouncements about allowable punch vectors.
- Oppression does not equate to virtue. Members of oppressed groups are as likely as any other to oppress, abuse, or cheat others, usually those within their own group. This makes bad actors within oppressed groups deserving of satire and ridicule.
- Punch direction is very hard to calculate. Within oppressed tribal groups, for example, are oppressed subgroups whose oppression is an essential and often explicit feature of the tribe itself. Protecting the oppressed oppressors via some ham-handed declaration about punching down gives them a get-out-of-subgroup-oppression-jail-free card.
