In today’s world, the job search is getting more and more difficult. You need to use any advantage that you can over your competition. Now there are the obvious advantages, such as a good resume, an elevator speech, “who you know”, but what about a less obvious advantage? I’m talking about in-depth details about who is calling you. This is also referred to as Caller ID.

Though Caller ID is not something that first comes to mind while job searching, it can assist you in the process of finding a job. According to a study done by StandOut CV, the average job seeker applies for “16 jobs per week and it usually takes 27 job applications to secure one job interview.” Applying for that many jobs can be both stressful and time-consuming. Caller ID can help ease this situation. When you get a phone call after applying to multiple jobs, it’s to your advantage to know who is calling and not just see a random number.

With robocalls on the rise, Caller ID is extremely beneficial while job searching. During May 2017 in the USA, there were 2.6 billion robocalls made. With this amount of robocalls alone you are already at risk of being scammed. Now when you add in the fact that you just gave your phone number to multiple companies; that can make you very susceptible. In fact, one of the top 10 leading robocall offenders is actually impersonating recruiters. To go even further, job submission websites are potentially vulnerable to data breaches and some are in the business of just capturing your personal information.

In my experience, I used an Android application called CallApp. The biggest benefit of CallApp for me was the “see who’s calling you” feature. This feature was so helpful for me because whenever someone called I saw their image, social media accounts, recent social feed with relevant updates on their actions, mutual friends, etc. With CallApp you’re always able to see who is calling. It also can automatically block phone calls from spammers and telemarketers. These are two major advantages while on a job search.

The first advantage, by being able to see which company is calling, greatly increases your preparedness and enables you to accept the call in a professional manner. Having all the available information on who is calling gives you that extra edge over other job seekers. The second advantage, the spam blocker, is a great feature for the security benefits while job searching. For instance, you may think a recruiter has just called you but in reality, it’s a scammer. With the spam block feature, this call will never even get through. So get the advantage over your competition and be ready when that call comes.
