Indoor Air Quality is more important than it’s ever been. In order to stay healthy, it’s often not enough to remove dust and pollen from the air. You need to get rid of airborne viruses and bacteria. There are a number of ways to do that, but one of the most effective is using ultraviolet light. Here’s what UV air purification is, and the benefits it can have for your home.

What Is UV Air Purification?

Ultraviolet light kills organic matter on contact. That’s why it’s dangerous to look directly at an eclipse. However, used properly and safely, it can be beneficial. There are three essential types of UV light: UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. The light with the shortest wavelength — and therefore the most effective — is UV-C.

In UV air purification, a UV-C light is placed in your ventilation system, so that all of your air is exposed to it before it circulates through your home. The light kills bacteria, viruses, mold, mildew, and any other organic contaminants that may be lurking in the air. This reduces your chances of getting sick, whether it’s with COVID, or cold and flu.

Benefits of UV Air Purification

The main benefit of UV-C light is improved indoor air quality. It’s great for reducing your risk during cold and flu season, as well as reducing things like allergies and asthma. It gives you cleaner air, which helps keep you healthier. What’s more, it kills viruses and bacteria without using harsh chemicals, so it’s better for you, and for your air than a lot of other air cleaners.

Keeping your air clean can also help improve the efficiency of your HVAC system, which will save you money and energy. And reducing mold and mildew helps improve your system’s overall maintenance.

Limitations of UV Air Purification

There are two issues to keep in mind when using UV air purification. The first is safety. You are made entirely of organic matter. If you look at the light directly, or touch it while it’s turned on, it can cause serious harm. So don’t ever access your UV light unless you’re sure it’s turned off, and/or you’re using proper safety equipment. If it needs to be looked at, you’re better off calling your HVAC technician.

The other issue is that, while the UV light is great for killing mold, bacteria, etc., it doesn’t actually eliminate the particles from the air. They can still be breathed in. Furthermore, it only works on organic matter. Inorganic particles, like dust, are still in the air.

The ideal way to use UV purification is in tandem with an air purifier with a HEPA filter. UV light kills the harmful organic contaminants. Then the HEPA filter removes the particles from the air. Between the two, you’ll be well covered, so you can breathe easier.

Different air purification methods work better for different homes and different situations. If you want help finding the best air purifier or the best filter for your needs, to help improve your home’s IAQ, contact us!
