Finding people with bad motivation and poor work results happens regardless if they are employees or contractors. So I don’t think there is a general recipe.

I’ve dealt with colleague employees who said “I don’t care if this company goes bankrupt or not” after working several years at the company.

I think it’s the responsibility of the manager to detect inappropriate behavior, ask for intermediate releases and fire the employee or the contractor when the results aren’t good :)

This has almost nothing to do with the status of the person doing the work.
