Why School is a “Waste of Time”

“Girl Studying” by oanaunciuleanu

Education is very important, but school is certainly a waste of time IF you got nothing that you want to pursue as your career. Why bother to sit for hours in a classroom that taught you subjects that you would eventually discard on when you enter the harsh world of professionals?

Unless you want to pursue career that are related to the subjects that conventional schools offer (especially the ones with shitty curriculum, shitty facilities, and shitty teachers), then it’s a must for you to enroll. Like, come on, the career competition has completely shifting. People can sell or offer practically everything, thanks to the internet and social medias. On the other hand, that’s also the hardest part.

I was such an ambitious little girl. When i was in preschool, most of my time spent on participating on competitions. I got tons of trophies (and some tiny amount of money prize, of course, but it was hella huge for a preschooler). My mother proudly display it on a cupboard. Yeah, that cupboard full of all MY trophies. It all continued until i enrolled to a boarding school.

Middle school is the darkest time for my freedom, as i said in my previous post. Why? Because i wasn’t able to fully express myself via talents that i learned from when i was a mere 8 years old. Music, fictions, and drawings are forbidden in my school. How in the world i am gonna build a satisfying CV if the opportunity itself is non-existent?

On the other side of the world, when i was busy preparing for the National Exam, there are countless of talented writers who work hard on their first novel, manuscripts, grant their first writing awards, gaining international fame, etc.

Get it? That’s the “hardest part” i was talking about. Sure, every industry has competition, but we live in 21th centuries. You will have countless of rivals that would not hesitate to outrank you with their own quirks, intelligence, and of course, perseverance.

You want to be the best in the industry you want to make money from. You have to “dress” yourself with one specialization and ignore everything else. Sacrifice is a must. You should put some big efforts to your dream career. You don’t want to be mediocre in order to survive in the career world. Being mediocre means mediocre salaries, too.

This short writing is for you all, dear conservative parents of Indonesian children. Your children’s career choices are THEIR choices, not for you to dictate. All you can do is to support them from as early as possible. Let them decide. Don’t register your child to schools if there is no benefit for them.
