India’s AI Regulations: What You Need to Know
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly prevalent in modern society, with applications ranging from healthcare to transportation. However, as with any new technology, concerns have been raised about its potential impact on society and the need for regulation.
In recent years, India has taken a proactive approach to regulating the use of AI, with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issuing an advisory on AI regulations last Friday. The advisory outlines a number of measures designed to ensure the safe and ethical use of AI in the country.
One of the key measures outlined in the advisory is the requirement for any AI technology still in development to acquire explicit government permission before being released to the public. This will help to ensure that AI systems are thoroughly tested and evaluated before being deployed on a large scale.
In addition to this, developers will be required to label the potential fallibility or unreliability of the output generated by their AI systems. This will help users to make more informed decisions about the use of AI and to be aware of any potential risks or limitations associated with the technology.
The advisory also mandates the labelling of deepfakes with permanent unique metadata or other identifiers to prevent misuse. This will help to prevent the spread of disinformation and other harmful content generated using AI.
Furthermore, the advisory orders all intermediaries or platforms to ensure that any AI model product, including large language models (LLM), does not permit bias, discrimination, or threaten the integrity of the electoral process. This will help to ensure that AI systems are used in a fair and unbiased manner and do not have a negative impact on society.
While the advisory is not legally binding at present, it signifies the government’s expectations and hints at the future direction of regulation in the AI sector. As reported by local media, IT minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar stated that the stance taken in the advisory will eventually be encoded in legislation.
Developers are requested to comply with the advisory within 15 days of its issuance. After compliance and application for permission to release a product, developers may be required to perform a demo for government officials or undergo stress testing.
Overall, India’s AI regulations represent an important step towards ensuring the safe and ethical use of AI in the country. By requiring explicit government permission and labeling of potential fallibility or unreliability, the regulations will help to prevent the spread of harmful AI content and ensure that the technology is used in a responsible and ethical manner.
