Mornings like this
I woke up groggily, stared blankly at my ceiling, sunlight came piercing through my windows, tickling every inch of me. I turned over, sink my head in my fluffy pillow, stretched out my limbs to the four corners of my bed and swim in my sheets…
It’s 9 am.
Oh… mornings like this.
I swiped my phone and scrolled through the news feed of my various social media accounts — Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Dayre. Status update from Friend A: job promotion; Friend B: fancy dinner from last night; Friend C: a selfie 93847151 miles from my bed. Me: Yawn. I could hear the devil whispering “You suck” over and over again in my ears.
My stomach roared up a storm, I dragged my sleepy head downstairs. I rummaged my fridge for any leftovers to feed myself.
Empty fridge. Meh.
I throw myself back to my crib, the soft sheets caressed my skin. I closed my eyes and got lost in my sea of thoughts, drown in this emptiness…
The phone beeped. I jumped out of bed.
It’s 2 pm.
Another email on job vacancies. I spent the remaining hours of the day wondering if I should cook the curry-flavored instant noodle or tomyam-flavored one. I also sat myself down to draft my cover letter for job applications, which all remained in my Draft folder instead of Sent. In between that, I wallowed myself at self-pity, eyes green in envy with my friends’ perfect life on social media.
Mornings like this?
Oh no! Not mornings like this.
How about an alternative start to the day?
I woke up clear headed, stretched myself and sat quietly to do morning meditation. The sky was dark with a splash of colour at the corner. Gradient of light behind the puffy clouds. I open my curtains wide from my window, embracing the morning breeze, ready to get sun-kissed. 7 hours of sleep does wonder to the body.
It’s 5 am.
Oh… mornings like this.
I left my phone at the charger, put on my shoes, off I go to recharge my soul — a morning jog. I turned on Tedtalk podcast for uplifting contents. There’s always something to learn every morning! Two free range eggs, toasts and a cuppa! Mmmm… breakfast for champions! I could hear the devil scream “OH SH*T SHE’S AWAKE?!”
Stomach filled with all the goodness, I was ready to roll, heck, I will rock the world! I got my to-do list sorted and my weekly plans in checked. I have my weekend plans sorted — hiking on Saturday, futsal on Sunday.
The phone beeped. I got down to work.
It’s 8 am.
An email from a client. I spent the remaining hours of the day going through the files, putting a solution to problems identified. I also sat myself down to draft affidavits and written submissions. I made an effort to clear my Draft folder leaving nothing pending. In between that, I count my blessings and celebrate the little milestones in my life.
