Meta has recently unveiled the third iteration of its open-source large language model, Llama 3, featuring versions with 8 billion and 70 billion parameters.

These new models have demonstrated superior performance on various benchmarks when compared to other models of similar size, such as Google’s Gemma, Mistral’s 7B model, and Anthropic’s Claude 3 Sonnet.

Key Highlights:

  • Llama 3’s 8B and 70B versions have been trained on a dataset that is seven times larger than the one used for Llama 2, encompassing a staggering 15 trillion tokens and quadruple the amount of code.
  • Anticipation is building for the release of the colossal 400 billion+ parameter version, which is slated to arrive in the near future and is expected to rival the capabilities of GPT-4.
  • The Llama 3 model has been integrated into Meta’s AI assistant and is accessible across a suite of platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and the newly launched Meta AI website.

Significance

The launch of Llama 3 marks a significant milestone in Meta’s strategic vision.

  • As the average person’s interaction with AI remains relatively limited, the widespread integration of Llama 3 into Meta’s products effectively brings a cutting-edge AI model to its vast user base, numbering over 3 billion individuals.
