If I can do it, you can do it too

In just six months, I transformed my body into a well-formed figure that I always wanted to see in the mirror. I went from 84 kgs to 72 kgs in six months with no fitness plan and no strict diet- just the determination to register my journey from fat to fit and lead a healthy lifestyle.

It all started when I entered into a desired corporate job in 2017 with a handsome salary. It was all going as I dreamt of, I earned money, I spent the way I wanted, I did everything I wanted to do. Since, I was earning decent, I started heading towards a sedentary lifestyle where I developed a habit of eating junk and boozing frequently. In short, I was having the time of my life. (a dream of an average Indian middle-class boy)

Six Months Transformation Journey: Fat-To-Fit

The Step Back

I realized the time had arrived to re-think / step back — Was this the identity I wanted to create for myself? The answer was a straight — “NO”. I stood in front of the mirror and fat around my waist instantly grabbed my attention. This was not what I wanted to see in the mirror. At that moment, all I wished for was to slash those side bellies. As I was not a big fan of the gym, it took me around 1–1.5 months to be mentally prepared to go into one. Somehow, my colleague who himself was preparing for triathlon guided me that going to the gym is not about just making big muscles, it helps big time to build stamina, endurance, and remain active. I confided in him and decided to act upon his advice for my own sake.

The GYM

Disappointment Phase

I joined a local gym. The initial 12–15 days were bleak & I struggled hard to keep up my consistency. With tissues rupturing and muscles soring, the dream of achieving a muscular frame seemed unconvincing. With every new day, the motivation to hit the gym was declining exponentially. Moreover, whenever I saw a big guy in the gym lifting heavy weights and myself struggling with 7.5 kg, it gave altogether a different sense of consciousness. I knew I wanted to have his aesthetic appeal but my endurance level kept failing me. However, during this course, I managed to keep my motivation level high by reading inspirational quotes, blogs, and successful fitness journeys. I even discovered different types of workouts such as home workout, calisthenics, yoga, and bodyweight training.

Two months passed, although I witnessed no noticeable change, I was enjoying my work-outs. Suddenly, one day out of nowhere, I wanted to lift heavy weights (directly from 15kgs flat bench press to 30 kgs), to my surprise I completed 3 sets of 15 repetitions each. That particular day, I felt I can be part of the Avengers (feel-good factor). Two days later, I witnessed growth in my chest muscles, they were in good shape. From that day, I experimented with a combination of heavyweights, calisthenics, and bodyweight training in pieces. And it worked, the fat started to meltdown, muscles grew, and body started getting into the shape. It was a feel-good factor for me.

As everyone says in life — basic is the foundation, I would like to emphasis on including basic compound exercises into fitness regime. Compound exercises target more than one muscle group. These include but are not limited to:

  • Push-ups
  • Pull-ups
  • Dips
  • Squats
  • Lunges
  • Bench press

The above-listed exercises helped me to develop a good form and improve core strength, and ultimately lift heavy. (My experience says lifting heavy is important for muscle growth).

The Diet

It is simply 80:20 rule — 80% is diet and 20% is workouts. So, I religiously followed this old-age fitness Mantra — eat clean and lift heavy. Really, it was not as tough as I thought. My goal was clear, I wanted to be no bodybuilder but fit enough to admire my own reflection. Home-made food was my only source of nutrition, I experimented my way of cooking salads — mixing and matching of fruits and veggies (broccoli, mushrooms, and capsicums). The key to having a balanced diet is to distribute whole day’s nutrition into five meals — starting from heavy breakfast to light meal at night and drinking 2–3 liters of water is of utmost importance to remain hydrated. I strictly abided by this rule.

The Soul

The last and most important element is dedication. No one is going to witness a difference overnight. However, with each passing day of progressive workouts, one will definitely experience an indistinguishable improvement. Those improvements are going to add up, and gradually, you will notice a remarkable difference, evident enough to be noticed by the people around you. While on this fitness journey, remember to keep taking pictures of your daily progress (this will help you to write your journey)

I would suggest to sit down for 8–10 mins after the workout, think of the progress made and appreciate your efforts on self-development. This will keep the dedication high and motivate you to take up new challenges the next day. You will realize you were meant to lead your life the way you wanted and not the way others wanted.

Why it matters?

All the above efforts will lead to a sense of achievement and improved self-worthiness. Each and every day will be filled with enthusiasm to hit the gym with a new workout. On the other hand, time management will improve — you will be working effectively and efficiently in the office with intend to finish work on time.

Do all these things and in six months you are going to completely transform yourself and write your own fat-to-fit transformation journey.
