Engineering to Business

In my second blog I talked about my change from majoring in civil engineering to majoring in corporate financial management. The switch is something I’m very satisfied with. Like I stated in my last blog, I should’ve came to the university undecided. Luckily I switched early enough that I didn’t lose too many credits. In fact I’ll be able to join the CBA a whole year before I would’ve been able to join the college of engineering.

Some of the biggest reasons I switched were because I just didn’t want to do that for the rest of my life. The conversations I’ve had with the older engineers have taught me that I don’t want to waste my time doing what they do. Another big factor in the switch was my neighbor who is in his second year towards a mechanical degree. For all the time he spends studying and doing homework he has given up most of his social life. I’m not willing to give up so much for something I’m not sure I even want to do for the rest of my life.

Now why did I switch to corporate finance? Money. It’s all about money. Learning how to make it. Learning how to manage it. Learning how to invest and learning how to budget. Not just for me personally, but to learn skills that I can use in the business world. I was decent at math in high school so I applied for engineering. I now realize that my math skills will be just as useful in a business major as they would anywhere else.
