On paper, remote working is a no-brainer. Increased productivity, reduced costs, access to a much larger, diverse talent pool and flexible schedules for employees. The technology is there, too. It’s been there for the past 10 years. So why haven’t we all been sitting at home for the past decade doing home workouts and joining videoconferences?

Marissa Meyer famously backtracked and declared a no-remote-work policy around 5 years ago as CEO of Yahoo!. High-profile companies such as Reddit, Best Buy or IBM followed suit. Citing Marissa: “to become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration will be important…

So Berlin’s tech startup scene is booming and you want to be a part of it. Well there’s good news, and bad news. But there’s definitely a way.

Let’s start with the good.

Good News: Berlin’s Tech Ecosystem is booming

“A startup is founded every 20 minutes in Berlin.”

Wait — what? You read right. According to Gruenden, the German capital hosts 124 startups for every 10.000 inhabitants. Talk about opportunity. It’s no news that Berlin is one of the leading startup hubs of Europe, and after Brexit, it looks the startup scene is ready for a Brexit bonanza. Let’s look at some numbers:

Ah, success — that subjective, elusive compulsion that guides our lives. Difficult to attain, yet easy to define:

I’m not one for motivational ramblings, but I’ve noticed most conversations within my inner circle lately relate to this topic. And Simon Sinek’s video on Millennials in the Workplace which recently went viral got me thinking. So here goes.

Wake up early. Coffee. Drive to the beach. Paddle out. Cold water, pelicans flying, dolphins, salt, sand…the epitome of fulfilment on all levels — addiction, freedom.
I could rant on about the deep connection with mother nature or the invaluable life lessons to be learnt from your time spent in the water — but this is a coding blog.

So why the hell are you ranting on about surfing, you might ask? It makes for a great analogy to the current social stigma we have developed regarding employment in current society. I’m also obsessed with surfing. But bear with me.
