Terrific post! Thanks. However, I think you missed an important part of the joke about the guy waiting in the taxi cab outside the airport. Like several other good jokes in the movie, this one was political. The man in the cab was Howard Jarvis, businessman, lobbyist, and politician- the anti-tax activist responsible for passage of California’s Proposition 13 in 1978. Crusty and ubiquitous, he was kind of a “Bernie Sanders” of his day.
