I wrote this song after I watched a scene in a show or movie that I cannot for the life of me remember what it was called.

But, there was a guy and a girl. He was keen on this girl but as things started to get serious she began to pull away. Even after the emotional roller coaster this guy rode, he still kept chasing the girl. It got me thinking, what is the test of how much you love some one? How much are you prepared to go through? What’s the point when you say it’s over?

The track begins with a piano and a melancholy upfront naked vocal setting the scene of a guy left wondering where his girl could be while he waits for her on the driveway in his jacket and jeans.

As the sparse first chorus finishes other instruments are introduced bringing tension to music in the second verse. When the drums kick in during the second chorus the song begins to soar and the emotional ride is in full swing until finishing with a voice splitting last chorus and all band in. I hope you like Love You When It’s Bad.

Love You When It’s Bad was written,recorded and produced by me in my my dining room, then mixed by Jimi Maroudas (Eskimo Joe, Kimbra, Pete Murray) at Sing Sing Studios in Richmond, Victoria, Australia in December 2015.

The track evolved over many months. It began life a little longer. I cut some bridges that didn’t make sense. I originally had the drums playing the whole way through but it just never really felt right so I pulled them out.

The lyrics and the story grew over several rewrites until they settled in to this form. Art takes time. As Hemingway said, the first draft you get the kick, it’s every other draft that you try and give the reader, or the listener, the kick.
