How To Run A/B Testing With Instagram and Snapchat Stories

When Instagram Stories came out earlier this week I was ready to hate it. Being the direct copy of Snapchat Stories, I thought it would be DOA. But after digging into the product and playing with it, I think Instagram executed perfectly on the product and it could have some serious legs. That doesn’t necessarily mean Snapchat is in trouble. But I’d like to think competition breeds greatness and Snapchat now has more of a reason to try harder. Not a bad thing.

I‘ve seen a bunch of people talking on social media about which “Stories” their brand should use — and I’m here to tell you that there is a really simple hack to run the same photo + video on Snapchat Stories and Instagram Stories (and have it look native to both). You can run your own little A/B Test to see which one gets more viewership.

(Note: I think most of this is sort of obvious except the swipe down to on step 3)

You need to post to Snapchat first!

Step 1: You need to use Snapchat to capture the photo or video. You need to add it to your Snapchat story first. If you don’t do that, you will need to upload with the annoying white background.

Step 2: Make sure to save the photo or video to Snapchat Memories. Then export the video or photo to your phone.

Step 3: Open up Instagram, click on the + button to add to your story. Swipe down and you will be able to natively post photos and videos from the last 24 hours.

Use the photo or video you uploaded to Snapchat Stories and voila you have the same exact photo or video uploaded natively to both platforms. Now you can see which stories are performing better.

It seems some brands are already seeing great numbers from Instagram Stories.

Should be a fun few months to see how things shake out.
