All of us experiences negative thoughts from time to time, It is a normal part of being human, however, excess negative thinking brings problems and if you allow to continue, it will mostly have an effect in your state. It has a strong and highly destructive impact on our lives if we don’t know how to deal with this negative thinking patterns.
Everyday, I have to deal with these kind thinking and the most dangerous are the ones that creeps inside you. A negative thoughts that you are not aware of. I realize that you cannot get rid of negative thinking. The worst I ever did is that when I was having these negative thoughts and I am aware of it, I try to counter it by positive thinking. What do you think happened and felt at that time? I felt horrible. I was more anxious and frustrated because deep down I know there is a problem which I am not facing.
Below are some of the things I do and try to practiced everyday, I am not perfect! I am only human and I slip from time to time.
Being Aware of me experiencing negative thoughts.
This means that you have to know if your having a negative thoughts and it is not possible to monitor your thoughts every second. You’ll go crazy if you do this! One of the key things here is using your emotions as your signal to stop — to shut up or step back for a while. This will take a lot of practice since we mostly react to our feelings. What feelings am I talking about? negative feelings most especially such as anger, jealousy, irate, etc. You can also use this to your positive feelings.
Being Logical
This is what it means when people say “Face your Fears”. This is by far what works for me and if I employ this, I actually enjoy any negative thoughts that I am experiencing. Yes, enjoy! Most of the time when I use logic to my negative thoughts I laugh at myself and felt silly. When you are being logical, you are facing your worst enemy — You — The only person who can stop you is you! When I was hunting for a job and land an interview, my mind goes berserk. “What if I can’t find my words when speaking? What if I am not good enough?” Blah Blah Blah… but when I think about this thoughts, this is just is — a thought! — once I realized that, instead of worrying “What if I can’t find my words when speaking?” I practice speaking alone in front of a mirror. It makes me take action.
Focus on the NOW
The way I use this is ask myself a question: “Is it happening now? Is it happening in front of me?” if the answer is “NO”, then I say to myself, “then what the hell am I worrying about?”… I was thinking on how I could pay my bills at the end of the month. My mind was thinking about How I could pay it and the amount that I needed to pay, and if my salary is enough for our monthly expenses. Now how would you feel? worried, frustrated, sad, hopeless… if these is how I felt and think, What would be the effect on my current job? I will have a mediocre work and probably will make a lot of mistakes. Yes, there are bills I need to pay at the end of the month, that’s a fact, but will it help thinking and worrying about something which will happen in the future?
I have tried others but these are the things that works for me as of now. I am open to ideas on how someone deal with his negative thoughts. I love to hear how people conquer their own fears. Don’t be shy and leave a comment below.
