It is estimated that American families produce an average of 20 pounds of food waste per month . If not composted, all of this waste has to be transported from individual homes to landfills.
A common social norm, reciprocity involves our obligation to return favors done by others.
The same effect happens in reverse, where a logical argument has little impact on a person who is emotional whilst an emotional argument is more powerful.

I spoke with Roya Kazemi, a behavior change specialist and marketing professional who founded Vision Flourish. She was the first director of GreeNYC, a startup marketing program dedicated to helping the city achieve its ambitious sustainability goals. She’s worked on many marketing strategies to help NYC residents live more sustainably.
My goal: To change people’s perception of food waste as trash into a renewable resource.
What’s my why? I care about efficient use of materials on the earth. We give back what we take from the earth. People who consume food can help grow food. It should be easy to be sustainable, to counteract climate change. Our systems should not trap us in behaviors that riddle us with guilt.
We are sending organic waste to landfill, which creates methane gas and contributes to global warming. Instead, we should be using organic waste to create compost and renewable energy.
For my mini prototype last week, I decided to do a deep dive and start building the website component of my system.
Create a website that people visit when they decide to learn more about composting and convinces them that composting is something that is easy, doable and meaningful to them.
