PAW-NDER — App for Pet Adoption
So we were here at Design360 @des360 here for our first Designathon.
It proved to be a enthralling and challenging experience for us newbies.
We were given a set of 4 probelem statements we chose the one below-
PROBLEM STATEMENT:
We were provided with the topic that there are many animals living their life in animal shelters and foster homes, neither getting the proper love and support from either their own kind nor the proper concern and attention from the owners of the places. Many people are not aware of these homes and shelters and thus cannot adopt them.
So on going into depth of this problem we tried to identify some trivial subproblems and find solutions to it which were-
Why are pets so Important?
Pets are one of the most underrated gifts of nature. They are not only a luxury for some can afford or animal lovers who want them, but are important in our day- today lives. Some of the main reasons are:-
1. Imagine not seeing any stray animal on the roads or parks. Won’t it be tiresome to watch only people. Thus, animals bring the much needed attractive and alluring environment to please our eyes with.
2. Depression is known to affect almost 15 million Indian population and is increasing at an exponential rate and therefore comes the sense of loneliness. Pets therefore bring company and joy to the suffering people and make them believe in themselves again.
3. Miscarriage or other reasons why people are not able to have little blessings in their homes is a major concern as it can affect the family tremendously. Why not have little blessings in our life in form of animals. They can be a support system in an otherwise shattering condition.
4. One of the less known reasons is that pets can sometimes be associated as a status symbol.
Why is Animal Shelters better?
There are reasons people prefer to adopt pets than buying. Here’s why:-
1. When you buy a dog from a pet store, you’re supporting cruel puppy mills.
2. Most of the pets are pre trained and therefore no worry.
3. The pets are already vaccinated therefore no danger to guests.
4. Adopting gives you the choice to choose your own companions with lots of options.
5. Finally, the feeling of saving a life is unmatchable.
Topic Discussion:
Which topic to choose was the only thing in the entire event on which we were at a split. Evaluating the pros and cons of going down the product design road with very topic, we finally arrived at building a solution on how to make people aware about animal shelters and foster homes and the advantages of Adoption.
Next came splitting the responsibilities. We knew that it’s going to be a long night and hence if we miss a deadline, there needs to be someone held responsible but who ? So, we decided to make our own teams and be our own leader.
Survey:
We decided to take a small survey in order to identify the target audience and the medium through which we should display the information.

Survey Result:
We started by a brainstorming session, asking ourselves the question on what are things required to make the people more aware of these animal shelters. Therefore,we conducted a short survey among people of all ages on what their opinion on the same was. A questionnaire was prepared consisting 8 main questions.
We were not well-read with the statistics related to the topic, so our friend Akashdeep devoured the Internet with all the ideas and questions that we could put in the form. We decided to take into account the most appropriate and precise questions that will help in the survey.
The results we got were analysed and the conclusions are:
1. One of the major points is that people are more than willing to adopt pets (more than 70%) than buying them due to major reason that people think a lot of homeless pets are available in these homes and shelters.
2. Most of the people interested in this were people between the age 18–30 implying that most youth were aware of the animal shelters as 69% of them want to adopt rather than buy a pet.
3. Around 69% of the people wanted to bring awareness through an interactive app followed by Social Media and Websites promoting them indicating that they are leaning more towards the electronic media than the print media.
4. Though most of the people cannot spend time with animals due to paucity of time, yet most of the people would love to have pets around them.
Solution:
From the Results of the survey,We finally decided to build an app (maximum votes) which will be publicized on social media pages(because it got the second most votes in the survey).

The App after an hour of brainstorming by our team members was decided to be –
1. Really User Friendly and have a great user experience because that is what this designathon is all about XD.
2. Mainly the app will focus on listing the location of foster homes and shelters nearby.
3. A small questionnaire (regarding the breed, age, temperature conditions, price) answered by the user will provide the user with the best foster home having a suitable pet for him/her.
4. In the survey we also found out that some of the users were vary of the fact that the animals they may adopt might be having some diseases and may not be healthy.
5. On some research we found out that foster homes and shelters have special policies to treat the animals there really well and are vaccinated regularly.
6. Even then if the user is not satisfied so we decide to give them the location and appointment from the nearest vet so that they can get their pets checked before adoption and take them for regular checkups as and when they require.
7. The foster homes will also have an option to be rated according to the facilities they have and the health of animals living there.
So we continued with an affinity diagram to further simplify the problem and work on it well.

After the Affinity Diagram we worked through the low fidelity diagram.

So after a long time spent on fidelity diagram we started working on the main functioning the High fidelity prototype.
We worked on protopie but to be honest it was a really tough job for a beginner.

So on conclusion it was a fun filled experience.
