In the 1890’s miners and settlers first came up here, but they were not the first.

In the 1780’s Russians made small settlements like the Vikings did on the other side of the world.

Russian Orthodox has a large place up here, mostly on the Aleutians. Red hair is slightly prominent up. I myself have red hair. Missionaries who came to Alaska with their bright fire colored hair, spread their seed. Just like the Japanese mixed with Dutch, Eskimo was mixed with Russian. I myself have some Russian blood.

Spanish & even the British, but those were short lived.

Ever felt a Sea Otter pelt? The human head has roughly 100 hairs per square inch on their head. A Sea Otter has roughly 100,000 per square inch. They are exceptionally soft, fluffy and makes you want to burrow down and snuggle in it for the rest of your life. Which exactly why the Russians just about wiped them off the map.

WHO MAY HUNT SEA OTTERS? Alaska Natives (Indians, Aleuts, and Eskimos) who reside in Alaska and who dwell on the coast of the North Pacific Ocean or the Arctic Ocean may harvest sea otters for subsistence purposes or the creation and sale of Native articles of handicraft or clothing if the harvest is not wasteful. A Native must be one-fourth degree or more Alaska Indian, Aleut or Eskimo or be enrolled under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. It is illegal for a person who is not Indian, Aleut, or Eskimo to actively participate in any manner in hunting sea otters. — Via United States Fish & Wildlife Service.

One little joy of being Alaska Native; “Haha, I can and you can’t.”

Alaska has had it’s fair share of visitors, even now-a-days we roughly see a Million tourists a year.

The State of Alaska did not become a full fledged state until 1959.

Before that we were a territory. Anyone who is 57 years and older in the State of Alaska personally saw our welcome into the United States. We’re pretty young aren’t we? How much did the entirety of 663,300 square miles cost on August 1, 1867 (territorial purchase from Russia), $7,200,00.00

“Seward’s Folly”

“Seward’s Icebox”

“Andrew Jackson’s Polar Bear Garden”

Were some of our nicknames.

Growing up here and talking to people outside, it amazes me how little people actually know about the State of Alaska.

  • No, we do not live in Igloos
  • No, we do not ride polar bears
  • Yes, we do take American currency
  • Yes, we do speak english (although it has been made official that the state language is all native languages)
  • No, it does not cost extra to ship to Alaska… Please stop charging us $6 extra dollars for a flat rate priority mail box.
  • No, Alaska does not have everything, but we’re getting there.
  • Yes, our snowstorms can be much larger than your hurricanes.

It is obvious that our weather, contrary to recent weather, can be very harsh. But god forbid that the news ever notices it.

Here’s a better picture….

Perspective.

Dear news stations like, CNN, CBS, NBC,

Alaska has experienced far worse weather than the lower 48. But thank you, thank you so much for including us… NOT.

Alaska Airlines. Hands down has the best pilots. (except that one guy who was drinking and driving)

Here’s to you lower 48, for not including the state of Alaska in anything. You take our oil, you tromp on our lands, charge us extra for everything and you can’t even put us on the right part of the map in textbooks. Let alone teach anyone anything truthful about Alaska.
