My university held some events with speakers, and being in the Bay Area there were many events held that made networking easy. So I had an advantage because of this — but I believe you can reach out to people through LinkedIn as well, I have done this a few times; and ask friends or professors who they know in their network. For example, while I was in Israel, I asked one of the instructors of my fellowship if he knew someone at Google Tel Aviv, and I met two people who work there through him, one of whom is currently a mentor of mine. I’ve also found networking with older students with similar interests very valuable, one of my mentors earned her doctorate while I was at university. Maybe I should write a post about this, haha! I’m looking for my next topic to write about, any ideas? :)
