Best Novels to make sure your kids start to enjoy reading books

Various studies show us that reading habits are declining among kids. In today’s world with fast-paced content, movies and TV shows easily available on smart-devices parents find it hard to make their kid concentrate on reading books. The importance of reading cannot be undermined.

Studies have shown that book reading is extremely beneficial. Dr. Seuss once wrote, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

The amount of knowledge and vocabulary a child can learn from reading a book cannot be compared to any other source of content.

It is almost impossible and somewhat foolish to force someone to read by telling them the benefits - especially kids who won’t understand your logic. However, what we can do is to provide them with books so entertaining that they fall in love with characters and the process of reading.

Choosing the right Book for your kids to read is very important. Reading is addictive, once the kids pick it up as a habit your job is done. However in today’s world when all the content is visual-based choosing a good starter is very important. It needs to tingle their imagination and pull them into the world of reading.

So, I have listed below the best 5 novels which will make your kids fall in love with reading. They are not in any particular order, all of them are the best according to me.

1. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

This amazing book by renowned author Roald Dahl is the perfect first-read for any kid. It’s about a poor boy Charlie Bucket who gets to visit a rather magical chocolate factory owned by the eccentric and world-famous chocolate maker Willy Wonka.

The story is filled with humorous characters and the writing style pulls us straight into the world of Charlie Bucket to the point that we can almost smell the amazing melted chocolate in the factory.

The book will also trigger an empathic emotion in kids and make them realize the importance of family values and resources.

The magical realism in the book is almost palpable to the point that one begin to believe that chocolates are indeed made in a magical way as depicted in this great book!

Even after growing up I like to read this book and it is still as amazing today as I remember it being when I first read it.

Famous Five is a famous mystery and adventure novel series by the renowned author Enid Blyton.

It is about three siblings Anne, Dick and Julian their cousin ‘George’ (Georgina), and George’s dog Timmy. A common plot is that the five meet over summer vacations and find themselves in midst of a new adventure. They work together as a team and solve mysterious cases.

The book is apt for children as it engrosses them in the mystery and makes them think what they would have done if faced the same adversities.

The novel also teaches children to be brave, courageous and tells them the importance of friendships and good friends. Also having a dog in the book helps engage kids a lot especially if they like keeping pets.

3. Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a novel series written by Jeff Kinney and is about Greg Heffley, a middle school kid who journals his life events hoping that one day he will be rich.

This novel has cartoons! Jeff Kinney being a cartoonist has made the novel children savvy by including cartoons in the novel.

The humor of the book is amazing and the cartoons bring the characters to life and one can create a real-life image of the cartoons in their heads pretty quickly hence making it easy for kids to visualize and enjoy.

(I remember in 5th grade when we went to library to issue books this series was always unavailable as it was very famous among the students.)

4.Charlotte’s Web

No discussion about children literature can be finished without mentioning the classic children book Charlotte’s web by E.B. White.

This legendary book takes one through roller-coaster of human emotions through the life of a pig named Wilbur and his friendship with Charlotte the spider.

The book revolves around the efforts made by Fern an eight-year-old girl and Charlotte to save Wilbur from being butchered. After Fern saves Wilbur it is eventually sold to her uncle. Their Charlotte becomes friends with Wilbur and by spinning words using webs try to save Wilbur.

The book teaches kids to be empathic towards all species, the power of true friendship, importance of will power and standing for the right.

The most interesting about the book is that it is equally enjoyed by adults too. The themes and characters of the novel while being somewhat comedic and magical for the kids also leave an impression on adult readers and makes them think about their thoughts and beliefs.

5.Adventures of Tom Sawyer

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is another classic novel written by none other than Mark Twain. The book is a collection of different escapades of a boy name Tom Sawyer and his friends(Huckleberry Finn being one of them),while growing up.

Tom Sawyer is a mischievous boy and does absurd and funny things and lands in problems due to his deeds. The book is very funny and mocking at the same time.

While the kids find it funny and entertaining, even as an adult reader it is an amazing read and has some depth to the shallow seeming plot.

The book is an amazing first reads as it makes the children tickle with the comedy and at the same time teaches the children how important friendships and owning your mistakes is.

The book is a great piece of satire and the day your kid will realize that, he will be very grateful for having read this book.
