India Shoots Down Facebook’s Free Basics Program

What I’m struggling with here is how the Indian masses will be better off now??

If someone wants to offer them limited service for “free”, isn’t that better than having no service at all?

Or was the issue that the “free” service would come with hooks that would make it more expensive and more difficult to start using a “full” “paid” service in the future?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a strong advocate of a free internet, but I thought this was about an area of the world where there is barely an internet there at this point. Having someone invest in the infrastructure would hopefully provide the momentum for other good things to happen in the future.

Anyway, knowing that the discussion is about India, things are rarely as they seem. So I’ll wait to see what this really means.
