I was in a class in college reading Song of Solomon, and I remember the squirms and nearly violent discomfort over Milkman — particularly from the men in the classroom. And my brilliant professor gave us an assignment: interview your mother about her experience breastfeeding YOU — or not. How did she feel? How did you behave? What was that experience like for you two? It was one of the most amazing assignments. It forced us to look at something very natural and very personal — something most of those men, and many of the women in our class had never considered. And years later as I nursed my own son, I thought of that assignment and Toni Morrison.
