Introduction
Quacquarelli Symonds’ QS World University Rankings is an annual compilation of global university rankings.
The QS rating, together with the Academic Ranking of World Universities and Times Higher Education World University Rankings, is certified by the International Ranking Expert Group (IREG) and is arguably one of the three most frequently read university rankings in the world.
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) is a corporation based in the United Kingdom that specializes in the evaluation of higher education institutions all over the world.
Richard Lambert’s evaluation of university-industry partnership in the United Kingdom for HM Treasury, the UK finance ministry, proposed the need for world university rankings in December 2003, which Lambert claimed could enhance the UK gauge of its universities’ global status. As a result, the inaugural issue of QS World Rankings, titled Times Higher Education — QS World University Rankings, was released in 2004 in collaboration with Times Higher Education (THE). THE broke from QS in 2009 and began publishing its own set of rankings. In collaboration with Elsevier, QS has started issuing university rankings.
QS designed its rankings to assess performance according to what it believes to be key aspects of a university’s mission: teaching, research, nurturing employability, and internationalization. The methodological framework it follows assesses universities based on six metrics,
- Academic Reputation (40%)
- Employer Reputation (10%)
- Faculty/Student Ratio (20%)
- Citations per faculty (20%)
- International Faculty Ratio (5%)
- International Student Ratio (5%)
Dataset
The analysis was done using python.
The necessary libraries were imported for the study
After which the dataset was uploaded and was quickly glanced through
Data cleaning and Exporationtion
The data was cleaned by removing unnecessary elements and removing the missing data that are too high to complement. The data contain 6482 observations and 15 variables. The class of the data was checked and the necessary data were converted to float for easy analysis.
The percentage of the missing data was calculated, and in this case, the score has the highest percentage of missing data and it was dropped.
A correlation heat map was drawn to see the correlation among the variables. It was discovered that there is a positive correlation between international students and faculty count.
Analysis
The analysis began by comparing the number of international students in both public and private universities. It was discovered that public universities have the highest number of international students
The data revealed that MIT remain the first university in the world from 2017 till 2022
Also, an analysis was done to know the most preferred countries in the world by international students from 2017 to 2022 and it was shown that the United Kingdom is the most preferred by international students followed by the United States of America then Austria, Canada, and the rest.
In addition, the United Kingdom has the highest number of international students followed by the United States of America.
The number of universities ranked over the year was also analyzed and 2022 has the highest number of universities rated.
The data revealed that the United States of America has the highest number of universities in the world followed by the United Kingdom.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it was discovered that 2022 has the highest number of universities rating which means more and more universities are realizing their data for analysis and with this assumption, we can expect that more universities will join the rating in the nearest future. This analysis revealed that there is a high number of public universities in the world compared to private universities. Though the United States of America has the highest number of universities in the world, the United Kingdom is the most preferred country by international students.
Finally, the criteria for rating the universities as stated above will be used in the next version (part 2) of this study and see the rating for each university, compared universities against one another, and look into the factors that make MIT to be rated first in the world over the past 6 years (2017–2022). Revealing these factors will allow other universities to look for a way of improving their systems and more so, to know where exactly to work on and improve.
