Adrenaline Dreams

They’re depending on me,
all of them.
Nameless, faceless manifestations
of people I’ve seen before —
somewhere.
I have to lead them,
to safety? To freedom?
Even I don’t know.
The odds are against us.
I can feel my fate creeping in,
darkening my thoughts,
as my mind rushes for answers.
I’m running out of time,
out of options.
There has to be a way.

I wake, with a start;
Heart beating, blood pulsing.
The loss is stinging.
I close my eyes quickly,
hoping my mind will return to that moment.
I want to go back, I need to go back;
but I never can.

They’re lost,
and I’ve failed.
