It all started with our Chief Troublemaker.
Meet Dulitha Wijewantha.
See, before Dulitha started on his journey as an entrepreneur, he was a senior software engineer at one of the top IT companies in Sri Lanka.
During his time there, he realised that one of his favourite parts about his job was getting to meet their customers. At a meeting which took him to Silicon Valley, he realised that he had fallen in love with how to sell to different markets.
Embracing the fact that his new passion would take him somewhere new, he quit his job and got started on creating a tool that would put both his passion and expertise to use.
Then sometime in 2016, a mutual friend introduced him to our Product Overlord.
Why do we call him that? You really have to see him in action.
Meet Ruban Nanthagopal.
A marketer working at a travel company at the time, Ruban was really intrigued by how software was built. So he took matters into his own hands. Digital Marketer by day, he was teaching himself how to code during late nights.
He figured he could build a better live-chat application than what his company was using and decided to give it a go. In the course of 08 months, he had taught himself how to code AND built an app called Click Connector by himself.
Realising that he needed a team to take it further, he waited till he could find someone on the same wavelength.
As you would imagine, sparks flew when the two met.
This is a visual representation of what it was like:
When I ran into the duo, they already had this idea to create a tool that makes it easier to reach your ideal consumer. With both of them having a shared interest in both technology and marketing, building an AI-powered marketing assistant was the only logical thing to do.
They understood the effort it takes to not just become the best version of yourself or what you offer but also making sure that people are hearing what you have to say.
Whether it’s someone who is thinking about jumping on the opportunity of becoming their own boss, or someone who has a boss who would like to get the word out about what they do, everyone needs digital marketing.
At the end of the day, having a great product is awesome, but what’s the point if people don’t even know you exist?
Dulitha and Ruban took this idea and ran with it, wanting to build a product that would help anyone become an expert at this thing called digital marketing.
We honed the initial idea and iterated the product till we were happy with it.
We called it Alakazam, and the rest is history.
