Of course Juneteenth is a made up holiday. But so are all of the others (possible exception: New Year's Day, which is pretty organically tied to the first day of the new year).

But the point is, when you run accross something you have never heard of before, your first instinct should be Google (or for us lod people the public library); not disparagement. He deserved the public education he got.

I agree it is a deeply flawed movie...follows the general male savior plot made most famous by Disney (Cinderella and Snow White in particular), BUT

There are many people who do, in fact, find sex work far better than working at a fast food job, or a parking lot attendant. It lets you set your own hours, the pay is often better, and it is a job better able to accommodate many forms of disability.

The problem is capitalism, not sex work.

In addition to all of the factors you describe (and I love the focus on the fact that from infancy on we are taught to persevere), there is one additional factor: What economists call the sunk cost fallacy.

In short, once we have invested significant time, emotion, and cash into a project, we simply hate to abandon that investment, either eliminating the chance of gaining any return on the investment--or limiting that retrun.

In economics, that means that people hang onto bad stocks, and failing businesses far too long, long after it is clear that they are going to keep losing money. But the same thing applies to anything we have invested time in. We overvalue the thing we are currently invested in, and undervalue alternative investments, just because we have already made an investment in the current thing/relationship/job etc.

Keep up the great writing.

"Best" is of course an entirely subjctive phrase, and subject to many interpretations. I chose to interpret best as meaning "most influential."

Applying that criteria, I think it is a close call between Catch 22 and Lord of the Rings. That said, I have to give the title to Catch 22. While everyone knows about Hobbits, not everyone comes anywhere near agreeing on what the books stand for. In contrast, Catch 22 is widely accepted as having a single meaning--an apparent choice where there is no actual choice at all. The phrase is now part of the common lexion, everyone knows what it means, and it derives directly from Heller's novel.

Absolutely micro-towns are doomed. There simply are not enough people to support an economy. With farming devolved to mega corps and automation, the economic lifeblood of these small communities is gone.

However, the death of these towns is not going to benefit east and west coast metropolisies. The displaced populations are headed to midwest midsize/large cities, like Springfield, Illinois, Des Moines, Iowa, and of course, Chicago and St. Louis.

They both acted immaturely. He is clearly intent on controlling her--the "allowance" was a tip off.

She only met this "friend" in secret when her husband was away. If this was truly a friendship, then why wasn't the "friend" around when the husband was arond?

Nothing in this article suggests men and women can't be friends. Instead this is an article about a deeply flawed marriage.
