Macklemore’s white, complex
Simone Stolzoff

I teach at a mostly white school and have run into a very weird phenomenon. Many students at my school do not understand just how easy they have it because they are white. In fact today I had to explain to a group of students at lunch why affirmative action is not racist. I understand why this phenomenon likely exists. They live in a bubble and going to a mostly white school doesn’t help anything. However in today’s world where one can have access to so much on the internet it is hard for me to see how they have stayed ignorant for so long. I think Macklemore’s song is not only a call for dialogue but also self-reflection. This issue is two-sided. Whites don’t realize how easy they have it and minorities don’t understand how we can be so blind.
