Today is my last day at Yahoo…

On Saturday night, my wife Mimi turned on a Netflix movie called “Hector and the Search for Happiness”. The movie follows the main character, Hector, on his journey around the world to research happiness. In the climax of the movie, Hector is asked to revisit the times in his life when he was most sad, most scared and most happy. I won’t give away any more of the movie but…

Today, I am sad, scared and happy — all at the same time.

I am sad because I really enjoyed working with and learning from my colleagues across product, engineering, operations, legal, sales and marketing. I am sad because I’ll no longer get to work on the amazing product we built together from the ground up and is now running millions of dollars of ad spend from top advertisers.

I am scared because I am leaving behind the secure walls of Yahoo and I have a wife and 7-month-old daughter to look after. I am scared because I still haven’t told my mom that I am leaving my job and I don’t want her to worry (for those of you that know my mother, Ronnie Chan, you’ll understand).

I am happy because I am answering my calling. I started my last company, Bread, in 2010 and Yahoo acquired us in late 2013. I’m excited to dive back into entrepreneurship.

I want to give a huge thank you to Marissa Mayer, Dennis Buchheim and Xuhui Shao for believing in the Bread team and for making us Yahoos. You’ve changed our lives and I’ll be forever grateful.
