I had an equally unsettling experience in the opposite direction — our white Account Director on a product pitched to blacks asking me to tell the black talent, on a radio spot, to sound “more black.” It’s definitely true that the authentic/generic limitations imposed by a non-diverse system are the worst manifestation of this, but in advertising, for a non-edgy client, it’s really true of every aesthetic choice, not just race.
