The Wisest Words of Will Smith

It was a typical Tuesday night, and I was up spending some time reading and seeing what other kinds of learning material that I could find on the Internet. I came across a compilation video on YouTube of Will Smith interviews that I’d never seen before.

The video had a significant amount of views; and although I’m certain that many of you have probably seen at least one or two of the many great clips provided, some of the wisdom shared on that video moved me to an extraordinary extent. So much, in fact, that I’ve decided to dedicate this week’s article to help share some of Will’s wisdom.

I’ve always been a huge Will Smith fan, and I’m sure that’s the case for many of you as well. I mean come on, who wouldn’t be right!?

From the quickly becoming “classic” show, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, to several huge blockbuster hits like Independence Day and Men in Black; many of us grew up on Will Smith. I certainly did.

Although there are many wise words from Will Smith that I could share with you today; I’m an educator, and it’s my job as an educator to absorb as much relevant knowledge as possible to increase the quality of my students’ lives, and then to cherry pick the golden nuggets of wisdom that are most relevant. Even one step further, any great educator knows not only to cherry pick the ripest fruit, but also to chop it up into concise, bite-size and easily digestible chunks!

So without further ado, here are the exact notes that I took on pen and paper during the video where I’ve collected the top five quotes of what I consider to be The Wisest Words of Will Smith:

1) “You have to start somewhere. Just make sure you start.”

2) “The difference between depression and joy is purpose. It’s in knowing that if you don’t go out and do what you do, other people’s lives will suffer.”

3) “Don’t let your successes go to your head, and don’t let your failures go to your heart.”

4) “You have to believe that something different can happen for you.”

5) “There is what I call spiritual physics. It’s the idea that energy is infectious, and that I can infect you positively or negatively. To me, the spiritual physics of the universe are flawless; so as long as I continue to affect and infect people positively, there’s no version of me not winning.”

What beautiful words of wisdom. Honestly. We could all take a little something out of Will Smith’s book (proverbial book that is). There’s so much that one can deduce from these profound quotes. We could all apply them to our own lives, dreams and ambitions.

That said, I could certainly go through and analyze each of these in this article, but I believe that part of the beauty of these words; and in all words for that matter, is that they are entirely subjective. It’s all up to you and me as the interpreters of information. We can let these wise words sink in based on our own unique perspective; our own place in our ever-changing life cycle.

One small disclaimer before I go that I’d like to leave you with though: If the spiritual side of his perspective bothers you in any way, just know that I can understand that. I was an engineer and a hard-core businessman at the start of my professional career; and like you, there have been many times in my past where I’ve heard wise words of a more spiritual nature, that I can only now fully appreciate. Words that I heard, but that I didn’t really HEAR, if you know what I mean.

What I’m saying to you is this:

If a lot of this stuff doesn’t really resonate with you yet; don’t worry, that’s okay. I wish someone had told me this when I was younger, so I’m telling you now.

One of the most difficult challenges in life is to always keep an open mind.

Remember… It is human nature to think we know what’s up, and that we know it all. It’s human nature to think we have all of the answers, and that everyone who thinks differently is wrong. Regardless of who or where you are, this is simply false.

There are no right or wrong answers in life… Only better ones.

Some of the very best advice that I can give you in this instance is to always keep an open mind. Remember that the people saying these things are often incredibly intelligent, but even they don’t know it all.

You don’t necessarily need to understand all of these words right now, but what you do need to do is have faith that you’ll understand them one day when you’re ready for them.

This I can promise you. When it’s your time. When you wake up every day living and breathing life into your purpose; like me, it’s only then that I can guarantee you’ll understand the concepts discussed in these articles.

As always… continue looking for new ways to grow and expand, and I look forward to connecting with you soon. Let’s all keep aspiring to inspire.

Feel free to reach out with questions anytime, and keep chasin’ the greater you!
