Bo staff is among the most used martial arts weapons in the world. This unique tool may also be used for self defense purposes and is thus, preferred by weapon lovers.

Appearance

Bo staff is a long wooden stick generally 5 or 6 feet in length. It is made up of oak wood and is used for offensive and defensive purposes. It is accompanied by a Bo weapon that is lightweight and is crafted out of less dense metal. However, the wooden staff is preferred because it costs less and is readily available all over the world. Another important reason for its popularity is its image. A wooden tool is generally not seen as a weapon as threatening as a metal one.

Bo Staff Types and Its Usage

It is available in some distinct types but the best one is collapsible bo staff, also known as extendable or retractable bo staff. This type of martial arts tool is popular because of its compact size. It is rather easy to carry. It is a light-weight version of this weapon that is portable. Most of the extendable versions are able to open up from both ends.

Basic Techniques

Even though the fighting staff does not seem harmful, it is always advised to use it under expert supervision. If you are a beginner who has just intended to excel in the art of playing tricks with this weapon, let me share with you some of the basic techniques. Before you begin, you must invest in a good quality bo staff for sale.

1. Rising Block

This is a defensive technique often used by beginners who have just learned how to use staff weapon. The first step of this technique is to hold this tool firmly. Once you have firmly gripped it you may move on to the next step. The next step is to hold it in such a way that your right palm faces up and your left palm faces down. If you are planning to block, it must be kept parallel to the floor and then raise it above your head.

2. Reverse Strike

This is a counter-attack. To begin, you must keep the bow staff above your head. It must be kept parallel to the floor so that you can easily rotate it counterclockwise. Once you have started rotating it, you must bring your left hand under your right armpit. This technique will help you attack the right side of opponent’s head or neck. This technique is really effective when trying to strike an unbearable injury to your opponent.

3. Sweep

This technique is similar to the reverse attack. You may consider the reverse strike as a prerequisite to sweep. Begin by keeping yourself in the position in which you ended the reverse strike. Keep on the end of wooden staff under your armpit. The other end should be in front of you. The trick is to move the striking end towards your opponent’s ankles.

4. Downward Thrust

This technique is reliable only when you have knocked your opponent to the ground. For this, you must first hold the martial arts staff firmly. Then tilt it to 45 degrees by raising your right hand and lowering your left hand. Now you need to extend your right arm and bring your left hand near your chest. Then force the lower end of the tool at your opponent.

Final Words

As a beginner, you must first get yourself comfortable with bo staff. Once you have achieved the required level of comfort, you can easily play any tricks and techniques with this tool.
