In the Japanese feudal era, real samurai were the most feared warriors. As these followers of the bushido code, wielded the perfect katana sword and never missed their mark once the blade was swung at an enemy or target. Even though the samurai sword itself was the perfect blade and more than enough to end someone’s life. Still, the bushido warriors that used this weapon made it look even more scary and frightening because of the skill and control they had over the fear inducing yet cool samurai swords.

Why Katana is called Daito - The Perfect Samurai Sword?

Among all the blades made in the feudal era, around and before 15th century, only the katana sword was given the title of Daito (which literally means the big or great sword). The reasons why the blade received such a title is obvious to blade enthusiasts around the world. But for the sake of this article, I am going to explain the features of a katana, the best samurai sword ever made, below:

Powerful Blade

Even in this day and age, the sharpness of this blade’s edge is still feared by many. As the katana samurai sword holds the ability to cut a person’s head (and other limbs) right off their body with a single swift blow.

Durability

The blade was brittle which is why it was prone to break at one point or another. This is why it was paired up with a wakizashi samurai sword (a scaled down version of katana) which was much durable due to its smaller size.

Curved Blade

What makes this daito so special? It is curved ken (blade) and the long hilt, known as tsuka. This was new for the samurai swords to have a such high degree of curvature in the blade unlike its predecessors which were much straighter blades such as the nodachi and tachi.

Lightweight

It was the great samurai sword that weighted almost nothing in comparison to the power it offered as a sharp and brittle blade. Top craftsmen, at that time, usually forged after heating and folding the steel of the katana over 200 times.

Other Samurai Swords Worth Discussing

In my opinion, there is no blade made by or for the real samurai that is not worth mentioning, but I am dedicating a detailed article on the daito (or katana). So, it’s only fair that I should mention some of its elders and juniors as follows, which the samurai also used to carry according to the situation, time and place (or occasion):

· Wakizashi (smaller sword, carried in pair with katana - the set together is called daisho)

· Tanto (extra small blade kept along with the daisho)

· Nodachi or odachi (predecessor)

· Tachi - The traditional nihonto (Japanese sword)

If I go into the details of each and every of these samurai swords listed above, I will have to add thousands of more words and on topics that you might not want to read about at all. So, I’ll be ending my article with the conclusion that you have understood the importance of a katana sword in a samurai’s life.
