Beautifically said. Wish more people, Southerners as well as Yankees like me, educated themselves on our history, independent of what our culture tells us or doesn’t tell us. The information is out there. Novels and history books abound on African-American life and history and the Civil War. We are such an uneducated society when it comes to our true history of how we treated Native Americans, African-Americans, and other minorities, right up to present day. So many don’t want to hear the downside, only the glorious parts of our history. I teach Citizenship classes and love our country for it’s lofty principles and great accomplishments and many freedoms. But knowledge of where we have fallen down can only make us better.
