Boot-camp challenges and how I have been able to adapt
Boot-camp has been an awesome experience so far, you can see my previous post about how I survived the first week (https://medium.com/@alaobunmi93/my-experience-in-boot-camp-so-far-2cebc33ceb7b).
I am learning to adapt to this experience, which is also teaching me how to adapt to changes in all aspect of my life. Learning how to adapt to tough situations is the beginning of getting anything you want, this is something I love and I have had to learn daily how to adapt to tough changes. There is a story about, boiling an egg and a potato in hot water, one becomes soft and the other becomes hard. When things get tough at boot-camp, I ask myself, “are you a potato or are you an egg?”, and so far so good, I am an almost cooked egg.
Learning how to cope in a very fast paced learning environment has not been so easy. Every challenge through out boot-camp has been new to me including writing. I have had to change my ‘lifestyle’; watch less TV, avoid social media and change my sleep routine to be able to learn new languages, read a lot of articles and solve amazing problems. Like they say, “Adaptability is about the powerful difference between learning how to cope and learning how to win”.
One of the toughest challenge I have had is learning to write test cases and in failing to get it right many times I have discovered what works best is writing my test cases before writing my code, that way I can write my code to pass my test cases. By changing my thinking I have also been able to save time, so yes being adaptable saves you time and energy that you will need.
The best thing about being an egg is that no matter how hot the water gets the egg would only get tougher and this is how I became a full-stack web developer in just two weeks from zero experience in any of the languages and frameworks.
