Art Fair Philippines 2017

I visited the Art Fair Philippines 2017 last February 16. The Art Fair is held at The Link Carpark, Ayala Centre, Makati City. This event showcases the Philippine Contemporary Art scene. The experience was great, along with great food and the company of friends I’m with during the event. Aside from the local artists and celebrities present during the event, it is not so different with the kind of attendees I’ve seen on my previous visit at the National Museum. There are students from all over the country who visited the Art Fair since there is an entrance fee discount to take a peek on the contemporary art scene in the country. It’s my first time to visit and experience the local contemporary art scene. I got to know and admire a bunch of stuff about the artists and their works present during the fair. Because of this, I decided that I’ll visit again next year or maybe visit local museums all over the country.

Art Underground is one of the exhibitors who showcased their collections at the Art Fair Philippines 2017. The collection displayed entitled “The Oneiric Time Piece” is a series of visual narratives about a universe inside a sandglass. The artist Marc Aran Reyes positioned his landscapes to suggest the clockwise and counter-clockwise movement of time. He used surreal elements to derived its meaning from dream interpretations. It captivated me the most since the piece lets you examine your own personal interpretation of past, present, and future through a hyperrealistic perspective.

The art collection presented by Patricia Perez Eustaquio represents textiles which were considered luxury goods for trade. It aims to merge both historical and material aspects of textile and paint. These tapestries shown portrays the cascading forms that evoke mountainous landscapes or mythical sceneries. Whenever I look on this piece reminds me of stories about mythical creatures my mom told me about. Likewise, it looks like a person’s mindset whenever he/she dreams about mythical or creepy creatures.

Agnes Arellano’s work is quite interesting during my visit at the Art Fair. The sculptures showcased in the exhibit is made from a live cast molded from the artist’s own naked body. The works presented represents four celestial beings: Dakini, Tantric sky dance; Inanna, multi-breasted cow goddess; Kali, Hindu goddess of Time, Death and Destruction; and Magdalene, Christ’s most beloved disciple. All of the sculptures have their arms raised upward. This signifies radiating strength, power, and wisdom of the Sacred Feminine. Agnes Arellano’s message in her work depicted the different forms of women or in general, Feminism.
