There are so many different laptop choices today, floating around the vast expanse of the internet. Different operating systems, different manufactures, different companies. Which should you choose to buy?

Many people, especially die hard Apple fans often pick a laptop from Apple’s MacBook lineup. However many people are beginning to pick up an iPad device for their daily use, and with Apple’s release of iPad OS, this is looking like a better and cheaper choice for many.

While built on the same foundation as iOS, iPad has become a truly distinct experience. With powerful apps designed for a large Multi‑Touch display. Multitasking made simple with intuitive gestures. And the ability to drag and drop a file with a fingertip.

Here are 8 tips to help you get the most out of your iPad!

Please note that you do not need the Apple products used in this article to use your iPad

  1. Learn the editing gestures. iPad OS comes with a variety of new multitasking gestures. Make sure to get familiar with them in order to quickly edit text, video, photos, or any other project on iPad.

2. Use an Apple Pencil. Yes I understand that the Apple pencil is expensive. However, depending on your line of work, this may be an excellent tool that can help increase productivity. Apple pencils are pressure sensitive and very precise, great for artists and notetakers. If an Apple pencil is to expensive, a Logitech Crayon might be for you.

3. Use multitasking. Who says multitasking is all bad. When using iPad OS, multitasking is an awesome feature. You can use it to drag files from one app to another. You can reference different documents from another app while writing an article. You can even have two mail windows open at one time for maximum productivity.

4. Safari has desktop-class browsing, use it. This is the only (default) browser that comes with desktop class browsing. It makes completing online work that usually requires a laptop a breeze on iPad OS. Apple has also added many optimizations for your touchscreen device.

5. Use Apple services. No matter how hard it is to get into the Apple ecosystem, you should try to immerse yourself as fast as possible. Jump right into the deep end as soon as you get your iPad. Not only do Apple apps look more pleasing than most 3rd party apps, they are also deeply integrated into the operating system, allowing for more productivity when working between one or more apps.

6. Get your favorite apps! Just because it’s a tablet doesn’t mean it can’t handle your favorite apps. Get the full* Adobe suite or the full* Microsoft Office suite on your iPad. These apps were also optimized by Apple which allows for compatibility with your Mac or PC as well as other apps on your iPad.

7. Relax & Unwind. Sometimes, to work, you just need a break. Your iPad tablet has a relatively large screen. Use it (as well as some multitasking features) to take a break from your work. Your iPad can also Airplay to other devices such as an Apple TV.

8. Get a iMac or MacBook. Yes they are expensive, but with iPad OS, sidecar was introduced which allows you to get even more out of your Mac. Use it to draw and edit in the desktop version of Adobe. Drag and drop files from your iPad to your Mac. Pick up reading that Medium story from your iPad on your Mac. You can get a used Mac for pretty cheap too!

*Full apps are not necessarily desktop apps.
