Can there really be Pro-Life Feminists?

Being a feminist but also being pro-life doesn’t sit well with many people. It is dubbed a total contradiction, many find it hard to understand how a woman be a feminist and want equal rights, desire to be respected equally to men when she doesn’t believe in abortion. She might as well give up the rights that she does have and let her man decide her life for her.

Feminism is to many women the right to make decisions for themselves; not having to ask permission or answer to anyone so, denying women the right to decide what they do with their body is outrageous and goes against what ‘feminism’ stands for.

The ‘New Wave Feminists’ are an organization that believes they are feminists but they can also be anti-abortion. Their slogan is ‘Badass. Prolife. Feminists.’ Now, many women find this highly offensive and are angry at it and we can’t be surprised as to why.

The group participated in the Women’s March events. The group’s founder, Destiny Herndon-De La Rosa, said that she saw the march as “a strong, united female voice to say “we’re watching you and we’re holding you accountable,” adding that the group was “really excited to be included in that voice.”

Allowing pro-lifers to participate in the Women’s March which was also commonly referred to as ‘March for Life’ received a lot of backlash on social media, as New Wave Feminism is a group that Feminists want to disassociate themselves with immediately. This New Wave group are everything that women have fought for so long not to be, they want to have choice and a voice and they want to be in charge of their own lives, groups such as New Wave Feminism stop them from achieving this.

Women belonging to the New Wave Feminism group are nothing less than Trump, their site’s slogan is, ‘Our world spends a lot of time tearing down women; we want to be a part of building them up.’ Yet they are doing the opposite. It is almost humorous hearing Destiny saying “I was not a Donald Trump supporter, no” because she clearly shares in the same ideologies and just like Donald Trump, wants to take away women’s rights to their own bodies.

Trump’s barbaric behavior and the signing of the ‘global gag rule’ is stripping all funding that helps women in impoverished areas have an abortion. This isn’t being ‘pro-life’ it is objectifying women and disabling them to have control over their own body and New Wave Feminism agrees with this. It is a violation of women’s rights; it is not what feminism is. Actions such as this ‘gag rule’ can have negative implications in the long run.

Denying women medical help when pregnant can endanger their lives and potentially kill them, babies will be born with severe disabilities, mothers should have the choice whether to keep a baby in suffering or abort it.

What happens to women who give birth to babies they can’t look after? What happens to those who are rape victims and are too traumatized to even look at their babies? Those are the questions that need to be asked and answers need to be carefully considered.

After the online outrage at Women’s March organisers for allowing pro-life activists to attend, they removed them from their website and list of partners.

“The Women’s March’s platform is pro-choice and that has been our stance from day one,” the organizers said.

There were many pro-life activists who didn’t go because they felt ‘unwelcome’, they didn’t feel like they were part of the feminist community. Despite this on January 21st, 2017 women all over the world united to stand up to Donald Trump, it was a direct protest and a reaction to his inauguration as President of the United States.

The Washington March drew at least 500,000 people alone. Almost 2 million people marched in the US in total, and worldwide participation has been estimated at five million.

Feminism might have lost its true meaning because of people who are trying to modernize it and make it their own. We need to remember that in the midst of all this we are losing who we are and what we truly stand for!

Being pro-life isn’t healthy, it encourages the world to control women and their God given rights, it teaches our children, who are the future, that women should have no control over their bodies, that men are the be all and end all in society. That is unacceptable and has got to stop.

We should unite against this issue every day, 21st of January should only act as a ‘kick-start’ to something bigger and stronger. Men, like Donald Trump, should not and will not tell women what they can or cannot do with their bodies.
