While it’s great to see representation of Latina women, the line “…songs that reflect musical styles like mariachi, salsa, and Chilean hip-hop” worries me as to how these diverse cultures will be brought together. Is Disney trying to have one character that will stand in for all the women of one and a half continents? In my mind, the representation of diversity goes hand in hand with a diversity of representation. I am also curious as to why this character is making her debut on the small screen, where in the past all (as far as I know) Disney princesses have debuted in cinemas. A quick google search suggests that Latinas are over represented in the movie going demographic (http://brandongaille.com/21-fantastic-moviegoer-demographics/). So why no major Latina lead feature film? Lastly, I really hope Disney doesn’t put Elena in the ‘fiery Latina’ box Hollywood loves to sell, where their only problem solving mechanism is the use of emotional outbursts. There are a lot of questions that need answering, but it’s nice to see Disney making an attempt to reach out to a demographic that doesn’t see much positive representation on the screen, big or small.
