Can love help ambition?

From the people in the business field I’ve been talking to, I learned one thing:

If you want to succeed, there is no time for such thing as a relationship.

Here I will argue with the part of the people that agree with this statement. I’ve been working on my own thing when being in a relationship and when not having one, so I can draw the comparison between those two situations.

Girl/boyfriends take too much of your time and your money. You can invest that money in a portfolio which will pay you dividends.

Okay, yes — it is true that dating as a whole “costs much”, but let’s for a moment imagine that a long-term relationship is a kind of an investment. I hate to use this narrative, but it is necessary. If a relationship is an investment what are you investing in? First of all, relationship means companionship. Not just in terms of a sweet couple, but also as a friend.

Your girl/boyfriend could be your most valuable partner in business.

Why so? Because this will be the only unbiased person who will tell you if something is not done right and if something has to be drastically changed. And you will be sure that they are not lying to you and this is their honest opinion, because after some time, you get to know the person beside you better than you know yourself. Your friends might cheer you up even though their opinion for your startup/idea/something is totally different and parents will always be pessimistic if what you are telling them sounds too bold, too risky. Sometimes you will be criticizing yourself without the need of it, your loved one will be there to “wake you up” and help you regain your confidence. Sometimes your head will be flying in the clouds — your partner will be there to put you back on the ground and remind you that you have a long road ahead.

I already told you that I have been in both situations — hustling with and without a companion. I will not lie, it is hard to find time for everything and that is why you need an understanding person. One, who will not make a fuss because they did not get the chance to see you today, because you had work to do. But once you have found this person, everything becomes easier. You have inspiration to do more, because you want your loved one to benefit from your success as well.

People who agree with the thesis that you shouldn’t have a partner in order to succeed are the ones with ill time-management skills.

If you cannot fit both a relationship and business ownership in your daily schedule, get an assistant, because you really do need help. Even if you go all in for your dream, you can always spend several minutes throughout the day to text or call your loved one and you can always spend time with them in the evening. All that is needed is good time-management skills. If you have them, you can balance both things in your life and have a successful business and a happy relationship.

A partner is not a burden for business people, but the most valuable person they have.
