“Consider you audience” is good. So this editor goes precisely against that aim: it forces you to always assume the lowest common linguistic denominator for your audience (assuming one consistently uses it). Besides, the original quote is being misunderstood: it says you “should be able to explain” to a six year old, not that you should always be expressing yourself as if you were talknig to one.
