How I made a Million Dollars on the Internet

Enticed? Don’t be. This is a mere clickbait title to draw your attention away from whatever you may be perusing, and into my article. I want to sell you something, but more fundamentally, I want to monetize you. This is one of the fundamentals behind affiliate marketing. If this term is unfamiliar to you, let me give a brief definition: Affiliate marketing is the promotion of a product or service by a 3rd party, who is compensated for his or her services (resulting in sales) often by a second party who brokers the deal and receives a cut of the action, acting on behalf of the first party who has a product or service to sell. So John runs a company that manufactures diet pills, Jane runs an agency that brokers advertising deals between John (the advertiser) and Bob (the affiliate marketer) in some way or another, run ads that promote John’s product/service.

This is the holy trinity of affiliate marketing:

Advertiser - Affiliate network - Affiliate Marketer

Many of the ads you see on the web are a direct product of this 3 party affiliation. The advertiser needs to sell a product, the affiliate network needs to receive a cut of the payout for each sale, and the affiliate marketer wants to monetize internet traffic by promoting offers which pay a commission on each sale. This is how each party gets paid, and it brings us back to the clickbait title. If you’re not standing out, you’re not drawing in traffic, and if you’re not drawing traffic, you’re not getting paid. Did I really make a million dollars on the internet? Whether I did or I didn’t is irrelevant. What’s most relevant is that the notion of making a million dollars on the internet appeals to you, the reader, and if you’re reading this, you’re one of many who have just entered the conversion funnel.
