Sit down and speak up — the UX researcher’s real job on a team

My friend is an intern as a UX researcher, she told me when she handed in her report to the product manager, the PM said that the report gave him some insights, but it might be helpless because it’s not directly related to business indicators like KPI. 
My question is: is it necessary to consider business indicators when doing UX research (since we’re representing users)? If so, how can we do it?
