Oracle Database, ODP.NET Core, and .NET 5

Since there’s high interest, let me give an update on ODP.NET Core and Oracle Entity Framework Core support for .NET 5 and EF Core 5, respectively. The Oracle .NET team is currently working on certifying with these new versions.

ODP.NET Core testing with the .NET 5 previews is looking very good. In fact, you can try the latest .NET 5 preview out today with ODP.NET Core 2.19.90. We expect to certify soon after .NET 5’s November release. We’ll just need some time to test against the final bits before making it official.

EF Core 5 will require changes to the Oracle EF Core provider, but the updates do not appear to be as extensive as EF Core 3.1 requires when migrating from EF Core 2.x. We’re tackling the certification in earnest now with the Oracle EF Core 3.1 provider completed. I don’t have an expected ship date yet for Oracle EF Core 5 support. I’ll provide an update later on. Nonetheless, the Oracle support time frame should be measured in weeks, not months, from the time when Microsoft releases EF Core 5.
